The weekend kicked off with fun, games, and parties, but local teens had to be watching their clocks. “When you’re having fun, you cannot just stop,” Elizabeth Hubing screams with outrage, “but with a time limit you have to stop!! It’s awful and depressing.”

          Ever since December 23, curfew laws in Iowa City have been in effect. There was much debate, people asking “why?”, and questioning whether the approach would actually work. In the end though, the law was passed. Some of the public reacted with rage and questioning at first, but now, four months later, the laws are stuck into our brains and scream annoyance.

          No one quite knows why the law went into effect. Some say it was because of rising crime in noisy neighborhoods, some said it was aimed at juvenile delinquency, a few even said it was a plot to take away fun, whatever the reason, us 14 and 15 year-olds march home by 11 o’clock each night.

The law “prohibits persons under designated ages from being in any public place between set hours.” A public place is anywhere from the streets to parks, even common hallways of apartment buildings. Exceptions of course are if you are with a parent, or traveling from a school, religious, or political activity. Oh and of course if “the juvenile is on an emergency errand affecting life or serious injury for a responsible adult.” So in fact, how could someone get caught? Use an excuse.

It seems like everything is affected now. You have to sit questioning. What time is it? How old am I? Is this a school related activity? Everyone has a little guilt of following the laws, even if they don’t make sense.  

Something as simple as prom this year had to be cleared with police officials because of the new curfew. Sgt. Denise Brotherton of the Iowa City Police Department said, “The parties will be treated as a school event, with students given an hour to get to and from the post-prom party.” That is just ridiculous. Prom has been going on for years and there shouldn’t be a law to change things this year.

Despite all the outrage, some believe the curfew will help. 13-year-old John Nguyen said he might be able to sleep better if the juvenile curfew ordinance passes. “I think having [curfew] is pretty good,” the 13-year old said. “There are a lot of kids out there who just steal cars or do drugs, and it’s just not right.” But will the law actually prevent these things? It’s unlikely, and in fact most teens won’t let the law affect them.  Many agree that the law still will only work with about 50% of teens.

“Half the kids are followers,” Police Chief Sam Hargadine said. “But a kid with a criminal mind already is probably not going to care.”

Olivia Slinger explains how the law could create rebelling. “No matter what, kids are not going to listen,” Slinger said, “In fact I think there will be more problems.”

Now I am not a bad person. I’m not saying that I’m outraged because this law will prevent me from going out and getting myself into crime. I just think it’s unnecessary and only creates annoyances for everyone, especially people who haven’t done one crime in their lives. I believe we can find better ways to prevent bad things from happening in our city.

New York Burger Stand on Boston’s Seafood Turf

This article is explaining how a New York restraunt wants to move and expand into Boston. But some boston residents are outraged and do not want New York themed businesses in their city, because they think that it will distract from the Boston themed businesses. Business owners will meet in January to discuss the “crisis”.

William Shakespeare was an english poet, dramatist, and actor, considered by many to be the greatest dramatist of all time. Some of Shakespeare’s plays, such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, are among the most famous literary works of the world. Shakespeare was known in his day as a very rapid writer: “His mind and hand went together,” his publishers Heminges and Condell reported, “and what he thought, he uttered with that easiness that we have scarce received from him a blot in his papers.” While Shakespeare caused much controversy, he also earned lavish praise and has profoundly impacted the world over in areas of literature, culture, art, theatre, and film and is considered one of the best English language writers ever.

This blog appears to be very political, with lots of opinions. There are many news stories, along with videos. It also has a side bar, where they list what is important, such as “What we are fighting for” and “What we are fighting against”. There are also “progress reports”. I think the site is ok. MY RATING 7

This is the trailer for the movie New Moon, which will be coming out in theatres in November. I personally am a Twilight fan, and I’m a little excited for the movie debute. This movie will be the second out in the serries. (Twilight came out eariler this year) Anyway, the movie should countinue the story, with Edward going away and Bella meeting Jacob and learning about his past.
